mxdwn PREMIERE: Federale Release Trippy, Cinematic New Video “When Snow Falls”

Based out of the Pacific Northwest, specifically Portland, OR, Federale specialize in richly orchestrated psychedelic rock. This cinematic sound is well demonstrated on their new song “When Snow Falls,” which is from their fifth full-length album No Justice. Today we’re premiering the artisticaally altered music video for “When Snow Falls,” a subdued, visually-intriguing clip that’s well complemented by the plaintive, yearning sound.

The track is bouyed by big, thick bass notes that echo through the mix in a manner that’s reminscent of the iconic Twin Peaks opening song. Rich string arrangements accentuate the song’s basic structure, adding a fullness to the sound while still leaving enough room for lead singer Collin Hegna’s baritone voiced delivery, which is forceful yet just vulnerable enough to give the song an emotional quality.

The video is quite simple, featuring Hegna driving around in a vintage car as snow quite literally falls outside his windows. The result is effective and quite trippy, a wonderful match for the melancholy song.

“We did all the snow FX with food coloring on oil on a plastic flat panel,” said Hegna. “Then we did all the driving shots in my friend’s 70s Torino with green-screened windows. There’s some stock driving window footage but everything else we did and then he went to acid town on the FX.”

Hegna has great pedigree, having spent time as a member of the famously turbulent pysch rock legends Brian Jonestown Massacre and serving as the band’s longest-running bassist. Federale was initially an instrumentally-based project, with Hegna only starting to record and perform vocals around the time of the band’s third LP, 2016’s All The Colours of the Dark (though their previous album featured guest appearances by the singers of The Black Angels and Spindrift.

No Justice was released on November 8. The record was released through Jealous Butcher Records and they’ll be playing a record release show in their hometown of Portland, OR on November 23 at Mississippi Studios in Portland, OR.
