De La Soul and DJ Shadow have released a new music video for “Rocket Fuel,” their latest single off DJ Shadow’s forthcoming album Our Pathetic Age, which will be released on Mass Appeal Records tomorrow. This music video was directed by Sam Pilling, who directed the music video for DJ Shadow’s song “Nobody Speak,” featuring Run The Jewels back in 2016.
The music video takes a comedic approach, focusing on a faked moon landing, in reference to a popular conspiracy theory that acclaimed director Stanley Kubrick faked the moon landing. Things soon build up into total chaos, as a fight and riot break out on the set of the moon landing and NASA offices, as the actors, crew members and NASA officials engage in an all out brawl, which is similar to the brawl shown in “Nobody Speak.” De La Soul’s delivery is passionate and aggressive, matching with DJ Shadows hard hitting hip hop instrumental.
De La Soul were recently engaged with a dispute with Tommy Boy Records, which was related to the group’s streaming royalties. Negotiations between the legendary hip hop group and the record label eventually broke down, causing the group to urge fans to not stream Tommy Boy releases.
Our Pathetic Age is a follow-up to DJ Shadow’s The Mountain Will Fall, which showcased the artists experimentation with a more electronica sound. “DJ Shadow’s new vision for music may seem scrambled up since he is getting a feel for this new deep electronica album, however his legend continues. He has not given up because of failed albums. His experimenting with sound and different instruments amps up his musical ambiance,” mxdwn reviewer Alyssa Izquierdo explained.
