Cat Casual and The Final Word are a difficult band to pin down. Combining elements of post-punk, goth rock, synth pop and neo-psychedelia, there isn’t one adjective that can sum up this Louisville, KY based band. They recently released a new single “Morose Code,” a slow-burning track that does well to encapsulate all of those influences into a cohesive piece of music. Today, we’re premiering the video for “Morose Code,” which breathes even more life into its fuzzed-out gloom-rock with trippy visuals with the boundaries between what’s real and imagined being blurred like a really good mushroom trip.
“Morose Code” is heavily inspired by Roger Waters of Pink Floyd, capturing the elements of some of his most evocative and confessional work. The underlying structure of the song is a lost demo cut in a Brooklyn apartment that’s had new life breathed into it.
“Morose Code” is one of the singles from Cat Casual and The Final Word’s upcoming sophomore album, The Secret Self. That record is out on November 22 through sonaBLAST! Records, a local Louisville label. While this is the second album for William Benton, who goes by the stage name Cat Casual, it’s actually his first with The Final Word as the backing band. His previous album was a self-titled release with the previous band The Holy Midnight. Benton has performed with acclaimed Louisville artists like Bonnie “Prince” Billy and worked with artists like Steve Wynn of the Dream Syndicate and Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth.
