Lee Ranaldo & Raül Refree Announce New Album Names of North End Women for February 2020 Release and Share Title Track

Lee Ranaldo and Raül Refree have recently announced a new album entitled Names of North End Women, available February 21 via Mute records. This latest project is supported by a music video of the project’s title track, which takes the form of a free edit of Austrian avant-garde filmmaker Peter Tscherkassky’s 1999 film Outer Space – which is an edit of the 1982 film The Entity.

“Names of North End Women,” is shot entirely in black and white, and is interspersed with numerous  quick cuts and edits, which give the video a distorted feel. The song includes an eclectic mix of percussion, tape loops and synth sounds, with elements of sung vocals and spoken word, giving the track an experimental feel.

“We were mixing in all these strange analog sounds from old cassette tapes, dealing with tape hiss; using very new technology and very old technology and mixing them together,” Ranaldo stated in a press release.

“This record began as playing with samplers and cassette players,” Refree stated. “As experimental music, musique concrete, poly-rhythms.”

Ranaldo is best known as one of the guitarists and co-founders of the influential alternative rock band Sonic Youth. The performer recently teamed up with Jim Jarmusch, Marc Urselli and Balázs Pándi, for self-titled album earlier this year, and with The Callas for Trouble and Desire, back in 2018.

Refree is a Spanish recording artist, who has blended elements of flamenco, experimental rock and jazz into his musical compositions.

Sonic Youth recently re-released their monumental live album Battery Park, NYC: July 4, 2008, earlier this year.
