Singer-songwriter Anna Calvi has released a new song entitled “You’re Not God,” an original track written for the Peaky Blinders soundtrack. This track is taken from the first official soundtrack for the show, which also hosts Calvi’s cover of the FKA Twigs song “Papi Pacify,” and tracks from PJ Harvey, Dan Auerbach and Jack White.
Calvi scored the shows latest fifth season, which has more of a punk tone and feel to it, to match the current story line of the acclaimed BBC/Netflix series. This latest season shows the series family reeling in from 1929 Wall Street crash, and sees the family between Birmingham and London as they handle their devastating financial losses. Season 4 saw Adrien Brodie join the cast, year after it was announced on Netflix.
“You’re Not God,” hosts an abrasive and noisey feel to it with strong and pounding guitar chords, drums and Calvi’s raw vocal delivery. The end of the track brings a darker and more experimental outro, with a recurring string line, which Calvi laboriously breathes over.
Calvi will finish up her recent fall 2019 US tour dates next month, with a show at the Echo in Los Angeles, and a show at Rough Trade in New York City. The performer unveiled her most recent studio album Hunter last year.
“Just as the album lyrically explores the space between feminine and masculine, the music delves into the depths between raw and polished, primal and sophisticated, aggressive and delicate,” mxdwn reviewer Adrianna Fujii explained. “Whether she’s showing off her powerful vocals on ‘Swimming Pool’ or flaunting her electrifying guitar chops on ‘Indies or Paradise,’ Calvi’s confidence and liberation shine through every second of the triumphant record.”
