With the recent announcement from the estate of late prolific multi instrumentalist/singer/songwriter/actor Prince‘s expanded deluxe edition of his seminal fifth studio album, 1999, is slated for November 29th release and features a previously unreleased new single from The Purple One called “Don’t Let Him Fool Ya.” The reissue of 1999 includes 23 unreleased tracks and much more material that fans can bask in and commemorate the memory of Prince, an icon the music world lost on April 21st, 2016. According to Consequence of Sound, “Included within the super deluxe edition are the 23 tracks from the vault plus a live album recorded in Detroit on November 30th, 1982. Physical versions also include a previously unreleased concert from from the 1999 tour recorded at the Houston Summit on December 29th, 1982.'”
“Don’t Let Him Fool Ya” plays like a signature funk influenced track found on so many of Prince’s albums. The Consequence of Sound article concludes with “‘Don’t Let Him Fool Ya’ was laid down with recording engineer Don Batts during the summer of 1982, just months before 1999 was released. The song finds Prince playing with his falsetto over a slapping bass line as he repeats the title phrase, a warning about a man who isn’t what he appears to be. ‘Don’t let him fool ya/ I know he said his love would always last,’ sings Prince. ‘Don’t let him fool ya/ But the FBI is lookin’ for his ass.’”
Prince, born Prince Rogers Nelson, easily accessible access to record music via his home studio in Minnesota attributed to the readily available ideas flowing in his creative space. As previously reported in Consequence of Sound Prince was once quoted, “‘I like to go with my intuition. Another thing Prince’s estate is actively trying to monitor is the unauthorized use of the late musician’s beloved songs. As previously reported here on mxdwn recently our current president of the United States, Donald Trump, was in hot water for using one of the most revered Prince songs at one of his rallies hosted in Prince’s hometown of Minneapolis, where Trump “… was greeted by a series of backlash after playing ‘Purple Rain,’ during the campaign event. A representative from Prince’s estate posted a short tweet to late musicians Twitter stating that President Donald Trump has violated an agreement made last year which would not allow Trump or his campaign to use any of Prince’s music. ”
