It’s been relatively quiet for the Denver, Colorado-based folk singer/songwriter Esmé Patterson, 2016 marked that last time Patterson released musical offering via her third full length studio LP We Were Wild, that is until news of her signing a deal with BMG Records as of Friday November 6. Patterson signed with a label that according to Flood Magazine shares an illustrious diverse musical talent roster from the likes of “…Pixies, Big K.R.I.T., and The Temper Trap, it’s pretty safe to say that 2020 should be a big year for Patterson.” An immediate response would be for Patterson to release new material and it is with swift precision that Patterson does just that, with her delightfully serene latest single “Light in Your Window.”
Patterson, formerly a member of the indie folk band Paper Bird, has released a total of three full length solo studio albums since her departure from Paper Bird in 2o12. In the very year that she began her solo career marked her debut album All Princes, I followed by her sophomore release 2015’s Woman to Woman and 2016’s We Were Wild. What is refreshing to hear with the news of Paterson releasing new material is a slight departure from her traditional folk sound displayed in 2014’s “The Glow” or even the more atmospheric rock textures featured on song from her 2016 third studio album We Were Wild‘s “The Waves.” In regards to Patterson’s latest single “Light in Your Window”, as previously reported in Flood Magazine, “…in place of the soulful folk perfected in her previous work, her debut single with her new label has plenty of electronic and R&B elements, thanks in part to her recording sesh with dream pop duo Tennis.”
The video for “Light in Your Window” begins with title cards that give it a more cinematic touch. Patterson is perched alongside brush that is adjacent to a lake she seems to stare seemingly in the distance. The scene transitions to her adorned in a silver sequins dress peering through a window as she is searching for something or someone. As obvious as it it is, the title track in question has a reoccurring theme of the anticipation of seeing a light projected in a window in the appearance that someone is home. The video has dreamlike sequences that depict Patterson smelling flowers in a picturesque setting and even has Patterson running after herself. What the latest musical offering from Patterson does exceptionally well is captivate her audience with strong emotions of a former love. Whether hearing someone’s name or a chance encounter to see someone that was previously a part of someone’s life intimately, are themes that the listener can immediately connect with.
The Flood magazine concludes with the genesis behind Patterson’s latest single “Light in Your Window” where Patterson is quoted saying:
“The idea (and the name) for the song ‘Light in Your Window’ came to me when driving with my friend Martin past his ex-girlfriend’s house. He reflexively looked up to her bedroom window to see if the light was on, and then was angry with the muscle-memory that had made him do so. He expressed the melancholy caused by the slowness with which healing processes can sometimes move. I had been going through a breakup as well and poured some of my feelings into that metaphor and it became a song!”
