Trent Reznor Gives Update on New Nine Inch Nails Music in Interview

Trent Reznor, the mastermind behind Nine Inch Nails, and fellow NIN bandmate Atticus Ross have been exceptionally busy this year with their new collaboration for Watchmen.

The duo has decided to put their entire works for the show on three separate releases.

According to his interview with Rolling Stone.:

“Well, we’re having some fun with the way that it’s released. There are a number of reasons behind doing that. One is there is quite a bit of music, and I think when you drop a big chunk — a couple hours’ worth of music — on the public these days, that’s a good way to get 90 percent of it ignored. So breaking it up is good.

In an age where music is extremely expendable, releasing multiple hours of music all at once is almost like shooting yourself in the foot. Releasing their content on different occasions is a great way to stay fresh and keep fans appeal. The production is released on vinyl is a nice touch seeing as now, more than ever, vinyl sales are up.

The motivation wasn’t to monetize it three times; that wasn’t what the deciding factor was. And we’re putting it out on vinyl because we’ve been on a physical-object kick. Speaking for myself, that’s for nostalgic reasons. I’m looking at a shelf full of vinyl albums right now, and it feels a little different than something that’s a cloud-based file, which feels a little disposable. They also tie into ‘Watchmen‘. Let’s put it this way: We overthought it.”

The first release was issued yesterday November 4th, the next one will be released on November 25th and the third and final release will be out on December 16th of this year.

As for new music from NIN, we are put on hold due to time constraints, but when artists are on a roll like Reznor has been recent, expect a new flow of creativity from the Alternative vanguard.

“Right now, we are finishing up ‘Watchmen‘, and we’re working on the Pixar film [‘Soul‘] that we are doing. And we have plans for Nine Inch Nails stuff, but we haven’t got down to doing it because literally every minute of the day for the last several months has working on score stuff. But the plan is to do stuff, yes.”

Justin Campagnone: I have worked in the music industry for the past 10 years starting as a promotions associate for local radio stations all the way to booking shows and running music festivals across New England. EDM, Jam Bands, and Stoner/Doom are my forte. The slower and heavier, the better.
