On Wednesday, October 30th, the Brooklyn based alternative rock band TEEN had their final performance. The Music Hall of Williamsburg hosted the bittersweet event, and fans gathered to say an energetic farewell to their beloved all-female family band. It wasn’t hard for fans to be thrilled by TEEN’s exciting and rich beats that they had been following since the start of the band in 2010.
During the nine-year endeavor, which began when Kristina “Teeny” Lieberson of Here We Go Magic formed the group with her sisters Katherine and Lizzie, TEEN has produced four studio albums — In Limbo (2012), The Way And Color (2014), Love Yes (2016) and Good Fruit (2019), all on Carpark Records. They’ve also released the EP’s Little Doods (2011) and Carolina (2013). Finishing out their career with one final show in Brooklyn, TEEN was sure to bring a show the fans would remember for years to come.
The crowd was what seemed to be a little older in terms of age. Nonetheless, there were ladies and gentlemen gathered to listen to not only TEEN but the openers Denitia and Will Butler. Both acts were very different from each other, but both definitely got the crowd ready for an unforgettable performance from the family of girls that rocked the stage just after. Lead performer (singer and multi-instrumentalist) Teeny had a very likable stage presence from the beginning of the set to the end. Along with her two sisters, Katherine and Lizzie, the band had an energy and spunky attitude that captured the attention of everyone in the room.
Listening to the set of TEEN, felt like you were back laying on your bedroom floor with your girlfriends just having a good time. That’s exactly the vibe of this concert — hanging out with your friends and just having a good time. It was easy to vibe with a band that had such an edge to them. What sets TEEN apart from other alternative all-female bands is their unique and exciting energy on stage. They knew how to get the crowd going, without even really seemingly trying. There was something adorable, yet sophisticated and edgy about the way they presented themselves on stage. While some had suits, the color scheme stayed in the black and white range. There were confidence and poise and nothing shy of a fantastic presence.
Opening with “Rose 4 U” off the album The Way And Color, it was a great way to get the audience ready for a night of an ’80s vibe with a fun flare. Some of the other tracks that were played were crowd favorites like “Runner,” “Another Man’s Woman,” “Tokyo,” “All About Us” and “Pretend.” Giving the audience more than they bargained for, TEEN also brought a trumpet player and a tenor saxophone player that only added to their enthusiasm for performing.
To keep the crowd going, TEEN could do just about anything they wanted and the fans would go crazy for them. During their performance of “Putney,” Katherine took over the drum kit (as she used to be their primary drummer). There was a backup track to accompany the band, but Teeny made the decision to stop and restart the song not once, but twice. It was a fan from the audience that yelled: “without the track!” And Teeny willingly smiled and said “fine, no track! Let’s go!” When they cut the track from the song, it sounded more than perfect and the fans loved every second of it. After the song, she shrugged and said: “it’s our last show we can do whatever we want!” And the crowd erupted into cheers and screams of excitement.
Rounding out the show with “Free Time,” “Better” and “All The Same,” it was obvious that the fans did not want their TEEN dream to come to an end. Teeny thanked the audience numerous times as the three sisters took their final bow as TEEN. The energy of the room was pure excitement, as the audience was still in admiration of the abundant talent and overall excitement from TEEN. A show for the books and a concert that brought TEEN’s career full circle to an fittingly fun conclusion.
