Deerhunter Touch On All of Their Best Attributes in Sprawling New Song “Timebends”

Rock band Deerhunter have premiered an epic 13-minute long track entitled “Time Bends,” which was originally conceived in a stream-of-consciousness styled recording session. This latest track utilized the band’s early avant-garde recording styles, and was recorded live direct to tape, in one take with minimal overdubs and mastered using a completely analogue signal chain.

“Time Bends,” also hosts a visual which shows the band recording the song in the studio, which was similarly recorded in an avant-garde DIY aesthetic to match the free forming style of the song. The track covers a wide range of styles, from rockabilly, to blues, to experimental rock, which is accented by more melodic moments delivered by their lead vocalist, Bradford Cox’s vocals.

Deerhunter originally formed in 2001, and instantly stood out in the burgeoning indie rock scenes for their experimental styles which blended elements of post-punk, shoegaze and ambient elements into their music. The band’s turn into noise pop on their fourth album Halcyon Digest helped the band receive wider appeal.

Cox has recently teamed up with Cate Le Bon for the EP Myths 004, which will be released tomorrow. This EP will contain the duo’s new track “secretary.”

Deerhunter have also recently wrapped up their summer co-headlining tour with Dirty Projectors earlier this year as well. They also debuted their latest album Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? at the beginning of the year.

“Why Hasn’t Everything Already Disappeared? isn’t likely to leave listeners feeling particularly empowered, but it is a brutally honest and thematically consistent assessment of human society,” mxdwn writer John Coakley wrote in his review of the album. “It makes for a complex, challenging and thoroughly compelling album that, in spite of some of its weaker tracks, is one of the first essential pieces of listening in 2019.”
