Fischerspooner Announce Breakup in Instagram Post

New York based electronic pop duo Fischerspooner have announced that they have broken up on Istagram, with a caption that states “Fischerspooner Is Dead Long Live Fischerspooner.” The New York-based group was originally formed in 1998 by Warren Fischer and Casey Spooner, who’s last names formed the duo’s title.

Fischerspooner released their most recent album SIR, back in 2018, where it was noted for their electroclash roots, which explored newer feelings. This project was executive-produced and co-written by Michael Stipe of rock band R.E.M. and producer Boots.

“Fischerspooner, in a return to the spotlight, takes their tried and true methods to some new emotional depths. SIR covers the eroticism the duo is known for all while serving up tracks with their moody electroclash sound,” mxdwn reviewer Emerson Oliver explained regarding the project.

SIR served as the duo’s return to music after a nine year hiatus, following the release of their 2009 album Entertainment. The duo discussed how working with Stipe allowed them to develop their music further in a forward-thinking manner.

“When you came in to work on that one song, you were so specific and clear about the things you thought I should do,” the band explained regarding their partnership with Stipe.”That part was easy for me because I’ve worked so long in performance that I don’t have issues with someone giving me direction.”

The group’s electroclash style is noted for their raunchy lyrics that oftentimes border on parody, backed by strong and blaring electronic instrumentals, which formed much of the electronic music in the early 2000s. However, the duo also covered another dimension, their lyrical themes in the latest release also explored aspects of queer culture, as both Fischer and Spooner are members of the LGBTQ+ community, which formed much of the dance scene in New York City when the duo began.
