When one door closes, another one opens. Or in terms of social media, when one app is deleted, then another app is downloaded. Its been a few years since the wildly popular social media app, Vine, has “died,” but 2019 has seen a surge of videos from an app that seems to be giving Vine a run for its money. Tik Tok was created and available for the market in 2017, but didn’t see any commercial success in the United States until late 2018. But nowadays you can’t scroll through any social media platform without seeing Tik Tok videos all over your feed, and for indie pop artist Lykke Li, this couldn’t be any better.
Much similar to Vine’s ability to create mini pop-culture superstars, Tik Tok has developed a role in taking underappreciated songs and giving them a second chance to be hits. Lykke Li’s, “Sex Money Feelings Die,” is a perfect example of this. It was a great song on her equally impressive album, so sad, so sexy, but was never pushed as the main single for the project. But since so sad, so sexy’s release, her “Sex Money Feelings Die” has been used in 19.8 thousand Tik Tok videos. In its original format as well as a slowed-down version of the song.
After her RCA record label noticed the songs play counts on both Apple Music and Spotify soaring, they did some investigating and traced the dramatic increase in plays to the popular video making app, Tik Tok. Considering the slowed down version of “Sex Money Feelings Die” was just as, if not more, popular than its original tempo version, her RCA label has decided to release the official slowed-down tempo for the song. Although there doesn’t appear to be any credit on the fan who originally slowed the song down, they allowed other fans of Lykke Li to enjoy her music in a whole new way. You can listen to the official slowed-down version of “Sex Money Feelings Die” below.
