“Juice” and “Truth Hurts” (bonus track) from Lizzo’s latest album are two bangers from Lizzo’s latest album Cuz I Love You, which is critically acclaimed as one of the most successful albums in 2019. The feel-good singer is facing two separate lawsuits for plagiarism on both songs.
Endorsed by the public, “Juice” is billed as the spiritual and special lead single from Lizzo’s album. It’s a positive state-of-mind that the singer is trying to spread in the song. “Juice” is currently accused of plagiarism. According to Pitchfork, Dance & R&B artist CeCe Peniston revealed a comparison video clip on Instagram. The video shows the alleged similarities in the ad-libs found in both “Juice” and her 1992 single “Finally.” Peniston also added some words on the post, “clear example of copyright infringement,” she said, “btw i love her music.”
The rising artist is facing another accusation, this one on the smash hit “Truth Hurts.” Lizzo’s lighthearted “Truth Hurts” blends pop and hip-hop and delivers positive messages about body shape and self-love. The song was recently accused by Producer Justin Raisen for inappropriate credits. In Raisen’s Instagram, he claimed the credits to “Truth Hurts” are: he, Lizzo, Jeremiah Raisen, songwriter Jesse Saint John and producer/songwriter Yves Rothman. Because he believes the line, “I just took a DNA test, turns out I’m 100 percent that bitch,” was from his demo “Healthy.” “Truth Hurts” now only credits Lizzo, producer Tele and producer Ricky Reed.
Lizzo’s lawyer responded to Raisen’s claim, “The Raisens are not writers of ‘Truth Hurts.’” She asserted, “They did not collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create this song, and they did not help write any of the material that they now seek to profit from, which is why they expressly renounced any claim to the work, in writing, months ago.”
A 2017’s tweet from singer Mina Lioness was involved in the “Truth Hurts” case. Lioness put it, “We didn’t have the same idea, it was my tweet that was taken from Twitter and put into a song,” she added, “Now everyone believes those were your words, when in fact they were mine. My creativity, my wit and my comedy.”
Lizzo responded to Lioness, “‘Truth Hurts’ was written in June FYI— someone made a meme on IG that said ‘I’m 100% that bitch’ and we were inspired, I give that meme credit when I talk about making the song. I’ve never seen ur viral tweet but I’m glad it exists.”
