“DHL” can be the German shipping company that we are all familiar with, it can also be a new surprise track from Frank Ocean. True to his mysterious persona, the R&B crooner quietly released a single on his podcast platform. But the internet and social media don’t know how to be quiet about “DHL.” The new release yields the expected storm of tweets and memes as fans begin to unpack the rich, dream pop atmosphere-driven single.
In the latest episode of “blonded RADIO,” Ocean played the new track “DHL” from his next project at the end of the broadcast. Produced by German electronic producer Boyz Noize, also a member of the electronic project Dog Blood alongside Skrillex, “DHL” is an electro-heavy track with plenty of atmospheric instrumentals.
Like any Frank Ocean track, the intimacy behind “DHL” triggers the soul. In Ocean’s distinctive vocal, the whole song is smoothly delivered within the story of an unexpected package from DHL, which finds a grateful and excited Ocean after finishing a long trip. In the outro, singing “Independent jugg, sellin’ records out the trunk/I’m already rich as fuck so the products in the front,” he also boasts his full ownership of being an independent artist and states his dedication to high-quality music.
Besides “DHL,” Ocean posted previews of two new songs titled “Dear April” and “Cayendo.” The two singles were remixed respectively by Justice and Sango, who premiered the remixes in Ocean’s new queer club night PrEP+ in New York City on Thursday. You can also find the vinyl versions of “Dear April” and “Cayendo” on Ocean’s website now.
Ocean has been good at being enigmatic and keeping his music protected. Last year, he only shared a cover of “Moon River” and debuted the “blonded RADIO” podcast. His latest album Blonde and Endless dated to 2016, following 2012’s landmark work Channel ORANGE. It’s easy to believe the release of “DHL” is teasing a new music collection. So stay tuned!
