Tokyo-based experimental music band Boris have released a new 12-minute long video for “Shadow of Skull,” a track featured on their latest album LφVE & EVφL, released in August. This latest project was released via Third Man Records, and comes after the close of their recent summer tour which ended last month.
This latest music video opens up with a shot of a statue of the Virgin Mary, before cutting to eerie shots of the band’s lead vocalist, and a room filled with candles and other religious-altar like symbols. After the seven-minute mark the track fades out completely to black, as the droning sounds of the rest of the song continue.
Boris is known for using in elements of experimental metal and drone music into their songwriting, which often creates a dark and heavy atmosphere that compliments their aesthetic presentation. Last year the band held a performance at Psycho Vegas, where other prominent acts such as Tinariwen and High On Fire performed.
“All songs are living things, they will show us very different mood and sound whenever we play them live,” the band explained in a recent interview with Sargent House. “Our songs have undescriptive silence, tempo and mood, so we will add another texture every time.”
The band went on to discuss improvisation as a major part of their recording process, stating:
“Basically, we don’t write songs, just go into the studio and jam together, then we have some idea and that will lead us to a specific direction.”
