Singer-songwriter Liz Phair has announced that she has reunited with producer Brad Wood, for her next studio album, which will be her first record in over a decade. Wood is responsible for helping produce Phair’s breakout debut Exile in Guyville, along with its two follow-up albums Whip-Smart, and whitechocolatespaceegg.
In addition to this announcement, the performer has also debuted a new track entitled “Good Side,” featuring the performer’s deprecating lyrics and Wood’s unique production style. Jangle-like guitars compliment the track’s upbeat drums, and later brass sections which appear in the latter half of the song.
Phair was a break-out star in the 1990s indie rock scene, with her debut record achieving critical acclaim upon its original release, and receiving a good amount of commercial success for an indie label in the 1990s, becoming Matador’s best selling record. The artist released a 25th anniversary edition of the album as part of the boxset entitled Girly-Sound to Guyville: The 25th Anniversary, last year.
The artist has said that her new album will channel the nostalgia from her previous records, and see how much she has grown as an artist.
“I think the comprehensive and gorgeous reissue of my first record plus the Girly-Sound track made me nostalgic for the old days — thinking about the mindset we had when we were just starting out,” Phair stated in recent interview with Stereogum. ” I think I was curious to see what kind of music Brad and I (and Casey) would make now, on the other side of our careers.”
