The circle of life
The pioneers of acid house release a stripped back EP calling back to their roots. 808 State’s influence birthed much of the 1990s UK IDM scene, Aphex Twin and Autchre cite them as early inspirations. The almost abstract and acidic sound of the Roland 303 simplistically paired with various drum machines creates a very specific form. Walls of percussive screeches and squelches feel dirty and covered in lofi dance floor grime. This aesthetic transports you to a world where problems and obligations crumble into a metallic alien world. This new EP Subsequent Granada Report relieves this world, it’s a short and simple project focused on defining the pure nature of acid techno/house.
“Macaroni” is a groovy, crunchy and old school return to form. Hypnotic drum machine rhythms hold a steady pace while simple square and saw wave sequences add the acidity needed for a delicious house salad. “The Ludwig Question” is fast and heady techno, with a slew of intriguing panned samples and tight percussive synth motifs. “Cannonball Waltz” is a complex flurry of woozy synths, mechanical drum grooves and surreal samples. The samples add structure and serves as transitions for the drum composition. “Spiral Arms” is insanely danceable with its catchy atmospheric female vocals and progressive heavily layered grooves.
The way 808 State evolves a tracks elements while keeping its core step and beat intact is what makes a great electronic track. The EP starts simple and gets more and more layered and intense. The tracks become more complete and rise above the sea of average dance tracks. The sounds and mixing feel straight out of the early 90s and bring a level of purity to 808 States production. Yet this purity in aesthetic is cleverly updated doesn’t feel a hint of age.
