Later this month Los Angeles-based multi-instrumentalist Mikal Cronin will be releasing his first new album since 2015’s MCIII. Scheduled for an October 25 release, Seeker is the first of his solo albums to depart from variation of being self-titled (Mikal Cronin, MCII and MCII). This new one follows the album’s lead single “Undertow” with Shannon Lay and William Tyler, his first new solo song in four years.
Today he’s sharing a video for the latest song to be released from the new album, a grungy garage-pop song called “I’ve Got Reason.” The video features use of double exposure to create a woodsy, multi-colored psychedelic universe. Later in the clip Cronin is seen playing with his band, utilizing the same visual trickery to create a trippy scene.
“This song runs through a mess of confusing interactions in a world that gets stranger all the time,” Cronin said. “Musically it’s got some Beatles and some Nirvana, with a bendy mellotron line that helps tie the worlds together.”
Just because it’s been four years since Cronin released a solo album that doesn’t mean he’s been idle. He performs alongside his longtime collaborator Ty Segall, playing a wide range of instruments – and most notably saxophone. He performed in Segall’s band just this fall when the garage rock star performed full album sets for Melted, Goodbye Bread and more. He also participated in Rock Lottery at The Echo in LA, where he performed as The Smoking Nurses with members of Moon Honey and The Active Set.
