A University of South Alabama student is accused of making terroristic threat according to a local CBS outlet after they were caught writing the lyrics to the 2011 Tyler, The Creator song “Radicals,” on a large flip chart in the school library. A criminal complaint filed against 21-year-old Jack Aaron Christensen states that the student wrote part of the chorus to the track which states“kill people, burn sh*t, f**k school.”
The track is intended to be comedic, and not taken seriously which is stated from the outset of the track which opens with a line stating:
“Random disclaimer, Hey, don’t do anything that I say in this song, okay? It’s f**kin’ fiction. If anything happens, don’t f**kin’ blame me, White America. F**k Bill O’Reilly.”
It is unknown if the chart was featured as part of the university’s library, or if it was used by one of the school’s programs. It was noted by prosecutors that this statement was made in close proximity to the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks.
While Tyler, The Creator’s style has evolved over the years, his early music was marked with harsh lyrics that were often violent, misogynistic and homophobic. This led to the artist getting banned in several places including New Zealand and The UK.
Despite these early influences, the artist has evolved over the years, going into a completely different direction with the release of his albums IGOR and Flower Boy. Eventually both nations overturned their ban on the rapper, with New Zealand ending theirs this year.
“Seven years is a long time to try and make [things] right,” Bay Dreams co-promoter Mitch Lowe told a publication. “He’s changed so much as a person in the last six years, since the last festival incident.”
