Lacuna Coil is an Italian, gothic metal band from Milan with blended male/female vocals that provide a unique and heavy sound. Their new video for “Reckless” shows a young girl in a school uniform who is being analyzed by a psychotherapist. The older woman reassures her to lie down on the couch. After the child reluctantly agrees and is then hypnotized, all kinds of horror emerge while the track moves in unison. The vocals are hypnotic and distinctly different in a world of metal.
In the video, the young girl is sucked into the hypnotic trance and led down a dark path where she loses her mind and sees a man with shards of glass on his face and body, covered in bloody splotches. That’s nothing compared to what she experiences next as she is basically inside the realm of a horror show. The song formulates around the video in perfect rhythm. In the end, the therapist comforts the child but smiles in a sick, sadistic fashion that is alarming and unsettling.
The video was directed by Roberto Saku Cinardi who also did the band’s video for “Layers of Time.” Cristina Scabbia says, “In ‘Reckless’ the ideas of freedom and being true to yourself come to life through disturbing horror images to cause a reaction in the audience and actually represent the obscure atmosphere of our new record.”
Band members include Andrea Ferro, Marco Coti Zelati, Cristina Scabbia, Diego Cavallotti and Richard Meiz. The band formed back in 1994, and is known for solid guitar, drums and contrasting dual female/male vocal harmonies that create a melodic, detached sound. In the track, “Reckless” there is a solid guitar solo that transforms into bass, high-pitched vocals set against growling darkness that spins you around.
In a past interview with mxdwn, Cristina Scabbia was asked how they (Cristina Scabbia and Andrea Ferro) find the balance with each other’s voices in their music. Cristina said, “We think about ourselves as two instruments. We can add to the composition. We don’t sit down and say ‘Oh I’m gonna sing more than you do.’ Our ultimate goal is to give balance to every song and this happens with what fits perfectly for a song. If it’s an atmospheric part it makes more sense if I sing it. If it’s an aggressive part it makes sense that Andrea does it. You know that’s exactly how you use the bass and guitar. This is what happens with our music.”
With eight studio albums released so far, Lacuna Coil has spent their careers perfecting their specific brand of gothic rock music. The metal band created their debut album, In a Reverie in 1999 and have been consistently releasing new projects every few years ever since. The band recently released, “Layers Of Time,” and their next album Black Anima will be released on October 11 via Century Media Records.
