Los Angeles -based rock and roll group, That Dog. debuted the title-track, “Old LP,” to its long-awaited album. It has been a long 22 years for fans of the band, but after a 14-year hiatus which ended back in 2011, this will be the first taste of new music from the band. Old LP will feature appearances from “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” singer Randy Newman, Red Hot Chili Pepper guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, Charlotte Caffey of the Go-Go’s, Bridesmaids star Maya Rudolph, and many other talented musicians. The album is set to release on October 4th through Universal Music Enterprises.
During the ten minute documentary about the song being put together, the band emphasizes that “music and family” are what the song is all about. The band called on their old childhood friend and former drummer of the band Maya Rudolph to help with some singing. Maya Rudolph may be known more for her acting abilities, but her career started with her being apart of the 90’s alternative rock band, The Rentals. Before she dropped out of the band to attend college Maya was the full-time drummer to That Dog. before Tony Maxwell took over.
The documentary takes you on a wonderful trip around the studio session and how the band really went out of their wheelhouse to bring you something they have never done before with “Old LP.” Anna Waronker had originally written the song to be played as just a classic rock and roll song with the guitar and bass prominent, but she thought, “why not try something different?” So she and the band decided to go with a full-blown orchestra. String sections to play the guitar pieces, tubas and other heavy horns to play the basslines, and woodwinds to come in and tie it all together. The mini-documentary gives the listener a better appreciation for the song as one gets to physically see all the hard work that went into the recording. If the title track of the LP is anything like the album than fans of That Dog. are in for a real treat! Pre-order the album here.
