Underworld Release New Song “S T A R” and Announce DRIFT Series 1 Box Set for November 2019 Release

Legendary British electronic duo Underworld has released a new song “S T A R” as well as announced the release of a new box set called DRIFT Series 1. The collection will be released on November 1, 2019 and consists of music the pair have created over the last year.

The project that would become DRIFT Series 1 began on November 1, 2018. That’s the day Underworld released the song “Another Silent Way” – from their the duo began to work on music created and published episodically over a 52 week period, with the word “drift” being imperative. During this period, Rick Smith and Karl Hyde worked under the mantra “Drift is the opposite of ‘normal’ or ‘usual’ practice; we’ll do this until we’re dust.”

This experimentation allowed them to look back at older works and create new music, sometimes with the help of collaborators. Some of the artists Hyde and Smith have worked with over the last year include Tomato’s Simon Taylor, Australian improv-trance band The Necks (who have an entire three-song CD as part of the release), techno producer Ø [Phase] on “Border Country”, Japanese noise band Melt-Banana, economics writer Aditya Chakrabortty and Black Country, New Road.

DRIFT Series 1, which was originally announced with an October 2019 release date, contains a number of previously unreleased songs over its expansive track list. The box set includes seven CDs, one Blu-ray and an 80 page exclusive book documenting the making of the DRIFT project. Additionally, a 10-song DRIFT Series 1 Sampler Edition is available for purchase.
