mxdwn PREMIERE: Desert Sharks Try to Prepare for the World’s End in New Video for “I Don’t Know How to Dress for the Apocalypse”

Desert Sharks, the New York City all-female garage rock quartet is gearing up for the September 27 release of their debut LP Baby’s Gold Death Stadium. After releasing several songs from the new album, today we’re excited to premeiere the newest single and video for “I Don’t Know How to Dress for the Apocalypse.”

The lyrical content is fairly self-explanatory, as the four ladies of Desert Sharks don’t know how to prepare for a cataclysmic, world-ending event. The album title seems a bit hodge-podge because it is – the title is taken from some of the venues the band has played in their formative years, Baby’s All Right, Gold Sounds, Death By Audio, Shea Stadium. Unfortunately, half of those venues have shut down recently (Shea Stadium and Death by Audio).

The low-budget video features the band members putting on cartoonish costumes and makeup, pouring toxic sludge into a punch bowl and baking a depressing cake. While the song title is “I Don’t Know How to Dress for the Apocalypse,” Desert Sharks seem like they know how to get ready for the end of the world, drinking some poison Kool-aid after a rousing round of karaoke. At just under two and a half minutes, “I Don’t Know How to Dress for the Apocalypse” is a perfect showcase of the Desert Sharks’s appeal. The song features blistering guitar riffs, plenty of melodic hooks and a touch of Riot Grrl attitude.

Their influences include ’90s groups like L7, Veruca Salt and most notably in the vocal delivery, Sleater-Kinney (we’re thinking more Corin Tucker than Carrie Brownstein). For proof of this ’90s influence look no further than song #9 on their new album – “Sick Sad World,” which shares a title with Daria’s favorite shocktastic TV show. They slot right in with recent garage-punk-pop acts like Tacocat and Bleached, but with a sound that’s still all their own.
