International pop star Camila Cabello has released a music video for her newest single, “Liar”. Last week, she also released “Shameless” and a corresponding music video. Cabello has been on a hot streak ever since the release of her debut solo album, CAMILA, in January 2018. Her most recent win is her collaboration with Shawn Mendes, “Señorita”, which has been racking up awards, nominations, and extremely high weekly chart placements including one week at the #1 spot. She’ll be performing on Saturday Night Live for the first time on October 12th, and she also recently became the #1 most globally streamed female artist on Spotify.
“Liar” fits right into Cabello’s style of relatively standard pop production with a clear Cuban influence. While the song doesn’t really go outside Cabello’s comfort zone, the intro is fantastic, and builds the song around excellent brass parts and a supremely catchy bass line.
The video follows Cabello as she tried to escape a Groundhog Day-esque scenario where she can only survive by telling the truth. Considering the chorus of the song, “Oh no, there you go, making me a liar / Got me begging you for more / Oh no, there I go, startin’ up a fire,” the concept fits perfectly with “Liar”. As Cabello tries to live out the truest version of her life, we see her reach an untimely demise in a few different ways before the day restarts; an elephant falls on her out of nowhere, she is attacked by drones, and even causes a massive bike pileup after being run over. Also, all the clips from the fictional “Tea Time” talk show are hilarious. Fortunately, Cabello eventually finds her ultimate truth and ends up back where she want to be, but not without first setting her rich ex-boyfriend’s mansion on fire in a great callback to the chorus, “Oh no, there I go, startin’ up a fire”.
