A bench warrant against R. Kelly has been issued by a Minnesota Court in Hennepin County, after the singer failed to appear at his hearing. The performer is currently facing charges for engaging in two counts of child prostitution in the state, in addition to his sexual assault charges in Brooklyn and Chicago.
According to CNN, senior Hennepin County Attorney Judith Cole stated that no attorney had approached her office or filed a certificate of representation for the performer. This warrant will make Kelly’s next scheduled appearance in that court non-voluntary, although the singer’s attorney Steve Greenberg has denied the accusations that Kelly failed to appear, as he remains in custody. Kelly is currently being held at the Federal Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago on federal sex crime charges, and has been denied bail.
“I was not served with any notice of court proceedings, nor was he. I did not resist his appearance, nor did he,” Greenberg stated in a tweet, before adding: “He is in custody. It is the prosecutor who must obtain a court order for #RKelly to appear, and it is the prosecutor who must go get him if, as here, he is in custody elsewhere. They do not just give him a travel pass from federal custody.”
Kelly’s court date for his federal charges in Chicago is currently scheduled for April 27, 2020, although the date may be pushed back depending on the decisions of the other courts.
