Berlin techno DJ and producer Ellen Allien has released new music video for “Free Society,” off of her latest album Alientronic that was released this past May. On September 27, the artist will also be releasing a new EP, Alientronic Rmxs 2, featuring reinterpretations of album tracks by Alien Rain, Shlømo, Hector Oaks and Fjaak.
“Free Society,” features a standard techno rhythm, snare and beat, that allow the rhythmic synths and ambient sounds that compliment that track ease into their buildups, into an amazing drop midway through, that throws the listener into an unexpected curve.
The visuals for the music video juxtapose the producer, and other people dancing with images of protest, as the sampled vocals state “free society.” The video was directed by directed by Kieran Behan, and holds a trippy black-and-white aesthetic, that is shown to be glitching out between the scenes of protestors and ravers.
Alientronic is the artist’s tenth LP released during her entire career, and was released on her own BPitch Control record label. The track highlights a lot of her eccentric style, blending in techno loops with various different types of synth sounds from various eras in electronic music.
“The LP was recorded during the cold winter months in Berlin at the end of 2018,a time when creativity hits a peak in the city,” Allien’s press release explains. “Sub-zero temperatures and dark nights keep the artists locked away indoors, finding time and space to journey inwards and tap into the deepest recesses of their creative energy.”
