At the start of this year, The Flaming Lips returned with King’s Mouth, an album filled with fantastical art created by frontman Wayne Coyne. Today, the Psychedelia-tinged garage rock band is doubling down on that creativity and fantasy with colorful music video for their song “Giant Baby,” a track that features narration by the Clash’s Mick Jones, Rolling Stone reports.
Directed by Coyne himself, the gorgeous and fabulous video has a bit of comedy from Fred Armisen and Mick Jones in it. The whole video starts with Armisen’s introduction in a talk show to welcome The Flaming Lips’ performance. Dressed in black capes, the band is immersed in a colorful neon-lit stage which disorders the audience’s vision and leads them into an imaginary space in time. With a trace of wind in the face, Coyne sings, “One night, I saw your face up in the sky…In a cloud across the moon, it made me cry…I could see my mother as she died…In my head and in my hands…In the dirt and in the land…And it made me understand…That life sometimes is sad.” The whole melody sounds light as a feather, but the emotion is heavy in the lyrics.
Just like the record’s accompanying book, King’s Mouth: Immerse Heap Trip Fantasy Experience that Coyne wrote, “Giant Baby” is innovative and ever-evolving in its fantastical story-telling, and displays Coyne’s creativity. The new music video is trippy and artsy and focuses on inviting the crowd to a type of shrooms trip. The song also expresses the beauty and purity of a newborn life, by singing “Life is fun and life is big. And life is full of joy.” It seems that, after experiencing different stages of life, the band is being quite expressive via their music reflection in King’s Mouth. In Coyne’s words: “The King’s Mouth immersive/child-like qualities are born from the same spark and womb as The Flaming Lips’ live performances.” He adds, “the King’s Mouth adventure was made for humans of all sizes, ages, cultures, and religions.”
The upcoming Riot Fest festival is celebrating its 15th anniversary. The Flaming Lips will feature alongside Blink-182, Wu-Tang Clan, Slayer, Bikini Kill and more from September 13-15, at Douglas Park, in Chicago. Check out the line-up and dates HERE.
