Ariana Grande made a return to Manchester this past weekend. In celebration of Manchester Pride, Grande performed at its festival, marking it her first return since the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing that took place at her concert. According to CNN, Grande was nervous about the set and was overwhelmed by her return. “I’m so happy to be with you, so thank you for having me,” she told the crowd, according to the UK’s Press Association. “Sorry, I’m so nervous. I had so much more to say but I’m really very overwhelmed. So thank you.”
The pop-superstar performed a nine-song set, beginning with “No Tears Left to Cry” from her Grammy-winning album Sweetener. She then ended her set with an acoustic version of “One Last Time” which she also performed at her One Love charity event that took place shortly after the bombing. Twenty-two people, including children, died in the bombing on May 22, 2017, which happened in the foyer of Manchester Arena as fans were leaving.
In a heartfelt letter, Grande shared in 2018 about the incident, which she wrote “The spirit of the people of Manchester, the families affected by this horrendous tragedy, and my fans around the world have permanently impacted all of us for the rest of our lives. Their love, strength, and unity showed me, my team, my dancers, band, and entire crew not to be defeated… “I think of Manchester constantly and will carry this with me every day for the rest of my life.”
