Stone Temple Pilots’ Classic Album Purple Is Getting a Deluxe Edition This Fall

Stone Temple Pilots are set to reissue their sophomore album, 1994’s Purple, on October 18th to commemorate its 25th anniversary. According to a Rolling Stone article, the Super Deluxe edition will include 3 CDs and a vinyl LP that will feature a remastered version of the studio album as well as rarities, demos and previously unreleased live material.

The initial release of the album featured the three lead singles, “Big Empty“, “Vasoline” and “Interstate Love Song.” “Big Empty” enjoyed success being featured in the 1994 major motion picture The Crow starring the late Brandon Lee. The June 2019 Rolling Stone article further states, “Limited edition preorders of Purple will include a replica 7-inch vinyl single of “Interstate Love Song.” The edition will also be released digitally the same day, along with a less extensive two-CD Deluxe Edition.”

To promote the reissue, the band released an acoustic version of the aforementioned single “Big Empty” on major streaming services. The article concludes that, “Other highlights are live recordings from the band’s performance at the 1994 KROQ Almost Acoustic Christmas – including a version of “Christmas Time Is Here” from A Charlie Brown Christmas – and the previously unreleased demo “She Knows Me Too Well,” a cover of the Beach Boys’ 1965 track.”

Purple was the band’s follow up to their highest-selling studio album, 1992’s Core. It highlighted the amazing contribution by the band’s initial frontman, the late Scott Weiland, who died of an accidental overdose in 2015. As previously reported on here on mxdwn.com, Jeff Gutt, the band’s current lead vocalist, “…is considered to be somewhat similar to Scott Weiland. He mixes well with some of their earlier music and helps steer the band into a new direction going forward.”
