It has been 14 years since Missy Elliot has released an album, that is until today. Only releasing a handful of music in the past decade, Iconology is her 5 track EP co-produced by Timbaland and Wili Hendrix. But on top of releasing her new EP, Missy Elliot also released an elaborate Alice-in-Wonderland-style music video full of vibrant colors and eye-catching dance moves. This track combines the old school gritty rap style of the late 1990s with that upbeat dance club vibe that modern rap has adapted. Missy said in an interview, “Let’s #ThrowItBack to a time when music just felt good and made us want to dance,” and that’s exactly what she did with this one. With “Throw It Back” being the standout song from her EP, there is no doubt that Missy Elliot is bringing rap back to a time when it felt good and made us want to dance!
Missy Elliot is no stranger to success, but 2019 could take her star and elevate it further. On top of her long-awaited EP, Iconology, and her Alice-in-Wonderland-like movie music video, Missy Elliot was inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame earlier this year. But her momentous year doesn’t stop there, on August 26th she will attend MTV’s Video Music Awards and will be awarded the VMA Video Vanguard Award. Elliot has been nominated over 40 times for a VMA award, and after August 26th she’ll have won her 8th award.
“Throw It Back” is a perfect representation of the evolution that Missy Elliot has made as an artist, and the entire Iconology EP showcases that Elliot is indeed an icon.
