Dualtone Records will be releasing a new cover’s compilations, Come On Up To The House: Women Sing Waits, to give tribute to the legendary singer-songwriter Tom Waits. This upcoming compilation, which is set to be released on November 22nd, will host covers from a variety of artists including Patty Griffin, Aimee Mann, Rosanne Cash and Phoebe Bridgers.
Two of thecovers, Patty Griffin’s “Ruby’s Arms” which is originally off of Waits’ album Heart Attack And Vine, and Courtney Marie Andrews “Downtown Train,” originally of Rain Dogs, have both been recently released. Griffin’s cover of “Ruby’s Arms,” takes the same somber approach to Waits original, albeit with a more orchestral sound giving it a more modern twist. Andrew’s cover on the other hand, is a complete rework of Wait’s original, taking his dark blues rock inspired track and turning it into a pop country cover.
Waits is one of the most revered singer-songwriters in history, who’s raspy voice and powerful lyricism have been the inspiration for many artists. His dark narratives filled with an honest portrayal of emotions are unique to his song-writing, making him one of the most revered lyricists in American music.
“Tom is a true original as a songwriter, singer and arranger. There’s just no one like him. Beneath some of the layers of sound and his truly unique vocal phrasing, are some of the most beautiful and heartfelt songs I’ve ever heard,” Dualtone CEO Scott Robinson stated in a press release. “After some great creative discussions many years back with an old publishing colleague, the concept of focusing on the sheer beauty of these songs by having them interpreted by a group of amazing artists with stunning voices, was a must-do project. Fast forward fifteen years later, we were thrilled with the passion and enthusiasm these artists showed when we approached them with the idea, which you can hear in their performances. Truly a musical celebration.”
