R&B singer R. Kelly has continued to come under fire as he was charged with child prostitution in Minnesota this week. Kelly was also charged with solicitation involving a minor. These charges come after Kelly allegedly asked a girl to go with him to his hotel room in 2001 after his concert concluded. Kelly is accused of paying her $200 to take her clothes off and dance with him. The charges were announced in a press conference on Monday by Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman who stated, “Minnesota victims deserve their day in court.” Currently, Kelly is being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago.
Current controversy over R. Kelly was triggered in part by the recent Lifetime documentary about the singer called Surviving R. Kelly in which many people involved in the singer’s life accused him of various types of abuse. After the documentary was released, Kelly came under investigation in the state of Georgia and his label, Sony Music, decided to end their relationship with Kelly. The singer was later indicted after a video surfaced where Kelly allegedly sexually assaulted a minor. Kelly also faced eleven charges against him in late May by the Illinois grand jury related to sexual assault and abuse cases. Most recently, in mid July Kelly was arrested and faced federal sex abuse charges with one indictment from Chicago and the other from the state of New York.
