It’s a battle of the alter egos in the latest installment of the YouTube series “Like a Version,” on the channel Triple J, as reported by Pitchfork.
Childish Gambino, alter ego of wildly talented actor, comedian, musician, producer, and so much more, Donald Glover, covered the 1999 hit “Lost In You” by Garth Brooks’ alter ego Chris Gaines. The cover is a stripped down, jazzier, version of the turn-of-the-century hit, as Glover performs it accompanied by just a keyboardist and a choir but it works. Glover’s gorgeous voice really shines and the choir and keyboard are the perfect pairing, and do not overpower the vocals, but at the same time they don’t get drowned out by Glover’s powerful voice.
Glover sounds like an actual angel as he croons the chorus “Heaven knows/ Head over heels and it shows/ I’ve played every field I suppose/But there’s something about you/ When you’re around/ Baby I have found/ I get lost in you.” He shows off his incredibly impressive range, hitting high and low notes perfectly in his signature style. His voice is enough to give anyone the chills and he has such control over his vocals that it is seriously impressive.
Glover is no stranger to the “Like a Version” series, as Pitchfork notes that he has the most viewed video on the channel to date. His cover of “So Into You” by Tamia has amassed the most views in the history of “Like a Version,” and he might break his own record with the “Lost In You” video.
He has recently made headlines voicing Simba in the Lion King, where he does a cover of the classic song, from the original 1994 film, “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” alongside the Beyonce Knowles-Carter. The movie has met mixed reviews, but the feedback from the soundtrack has been mainly positive, which is to be expected when it has both Glover and Beyonce on it.
Pitchfork notes that Glover will be retiring to Childish Gambino alter after releasing a final album. Nothing much is known about the last album but it is presumed that it will include the cultural phenomenon “This is America,” as well as the two other tracks Glover dropped in 2018 “Feels Like Summer” and “Summertime Magic.”
