Russian Circles Release Adventurously Experimental New Song “Kohokia”

With just a few weeks until the post-rock band Russian Circles releases a new album called Blood Year, the band has shared a new song called “Kohokia.” The song takes the listener on a seven-minute journey from the negative space in the intro to more metal-leaning passages to a melodic centerpiece with twisting and tumbling guitar riffs, concluding with a galloping metal chug.

“Kohokia” follows previously released singles from the new album, the black-metal influenced “Milano” and “Arluck.” The latter song was shared along with the announcement of Blood Year, which will be released on August 2 via Sargent House.

Blood Year is Russian Circles’ seventh studio album and the follow up to their 2016 album, Guidance which came in at #20 on our Top 50 Best Album of 2016 list. The band’s current lineup includes founding members Mike Sullivan and Dave Turncrantz along with legendary metal bassist Brian Cook, who has played in bands as important as Botch and These Arms Are Snakes, as well as playing with Sumac and Mamiffer with Aaron Turner of ISIS and Hydra Head Records.

The band has played with just about every big name in heavy music, including Mastodon, Chelsea Wolfe and King Woman. At the beginning of September the band will embark on their latest tour, which will be alongside FACS and Windhand. The tour will kick off in Madison, WI and after making its way through the Midwest, will hit major West Coast cities before going heading back east in October and November. They’ll also be performing at Levitation in Austin, TX alongside artists like Deafheaven, Angel Olsen, Black Mountain, John Cale, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Mercury Rev, Flipper performing with David Yow and more.
