Renowned pop artist King Princess (born Mikaela Straus) has announced her debut album. Cheap Queen will be released this fall through Mark Ronson’s label Zelig and its parent company Columbia Records. As of right now, there is no exact release date for album. The first single for the upcoming project, “Cheap Queen”, was released on May 31st, and Straus has released the second, “Prophet”, along with this announcement of Cheap Queen and her fall tour of North America.
“Prophet” begins with a few kick drum hits before Straus’s beautiful and commanding voice takes over. The keyboard remains the lead of the instrumentation throughout the rest of the song, with drums and a few guitar stabs joining in quietly during the verses, and featuring more prominently during the choruses. Straus’s writing and delivery shines on this song. Her chorus: “‘Cause I can only think about you / And what it’s like to walk around you / And why they like to talk about you / ’Cause I can only think about you” makes for a great ear worm. She elects to sing in a more airy vocal style than the verses, but lets out the “you” at the end of each line as more of a whisper.
King Princess absolutely exploded in popularity in 2018. Her now RIAA-certified Gold debut single, “1950”, became a massive hit early in the year. Soon after, she performed at major festivals all over the world including the Coachella, Governor’s Ball, and the legendary Glastonbury. Her upcoming fall tour will begin on September 20th at the Life is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas, and concludes on February 14th at the Truman in Kansas City, Missouri. The tour also includes performances at iconic venues like Boston’s House of Blues, Philadelphia’s Fillmore, and Washington DC’s 9:30 Club.
