Skrillex has released a new EP called Show Tracks without any advance announcement. The EP, which is released on OWSLA/Atlantic Records, consists of two tracks, one called “Fuji Opener” featuring Alvin Risk and the other called “Mumbai Power” featuring Beam. Both songs can be viewed on Youtube with a visualizer, showing a computer screen with the song files being shown, the user clicking around to show various levels and tracks. It’s a fitting visualizer for songs from an EP called Show Tracks, a style that is mimicked on the EP’s cover art.
The EP opens with the rapturous “Fuji Opener,” which features a female vocal line that’s been warped and manipulated to an inhumanly high pitch. The song then breaks into a fast-paced electro beat before hitting a half-time groove that’s sure to keep festival-goers on their toes. The song also features a metallic section before opening up into a euphoric, chilled-out break, concluding with that same pitch-shifted female vocals, complemented by pitch-shifted male vocals that hit the lowest end of the register.
“Mumbai Power” starts out as a bit of chill electronic tropicalia before building to the producer’s trademark intensity – it’s not quite the clanging noise-dance of his earliest work but it’s still quite obviously a Skrillex track. The song fairly quickly fades away to silence after its ecstatic climax.
