Iggy Pop Announces New Album Free For September 2019 Release

Punk pioneer Iggy Pop has been one of the most influential figure in rock music for nearly five decades, expanding into a variety of genres from punk, glam rock and experimental music throughout his career. After taking a break from his 2016 release Post Pop Depression, the so-called father is returning with another project, entitled Free, which is set to be released on Sept. 6 on Loma Vista Records.

While Post Pop Depression set a new record of commercial success for the artist, who was in his late 60s during the recording of that album and is now in his early 70s, it also caused him a large amount of stress. This upcoming project serves as a reflection for the artist, as a result of the album.

“This is an album in which other artists speak for me, but I lend my voice…,” Iggy Pop began in a press release. “By the end of the tours following Post Pop Depression, I felt sure that I had rid myself of the problem of chronic insecurity that had dogged my life and career for too long. But I also felt drained. And I felt like I wanted to put on shades, turn my back, and walk away.”

The artist went on to describe this project as something that is liberating, and that the feeling of being liberated, or as the album title, states Free, is an important feeling for him. He also described the album creating process as something “that just kind of happened,” alluding to the album’s themes of Freedom.

“I wanted to be free. I know that’s an illusion, and that freedom is only something you feel, but I have lived my life thus far in the belief that that feeling is all that is worth pursuing; all that you need – not happiness or love necessarily, but the feeling of being free,” he continued.”So this album just kind of happened to me, and I let it happen.”
