French-American songstress Uffie was out of the spotlight for a while, her first single in over half a decade, “Drugs,” was released last year, as previously reported by mxdwn, but with the release of her EP Tokyo Love Hotel earlier this year and the release of her new single “Mine,” it looks like she is here to stay and won’t be going anywhere soon.
“Mine” is absolutely tantalizing with a dark synth-pop beat and sensual vocals. The lyrics are equal parts fun and raunchy and the chorus is catchy and guaranteed to get stuck in your head for the rest of the year. The heavy, dark, synth-pop beat is reminiscent of Halsey’s Badlands era and the entire dark synth-pop trend that happened around that time with indie artists leading it and mainstream artists following shortly.
The similarities to Halsey makes a lot of sense because the press release sent to mxdwn notes that the song was co-written by Rogét Chahayed who has previously worked with Halsey, as well as other notable artists like Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. Imad Royal, who has worked with, Panic! At The Disco and Bea Miller, also shares credit for working on “Mine.”
Uffie lets us know right away that were in for some fun when she declares she washes her hair with Evian water, presumably alluding to the fact that she’s been out late at some unsavory places and has no time to do anything besides wash her hair with bottled water and it slightly comes off as Uffie bragging about the fact that she is rich enough to afford pouring the expensive water on her hair.
The chorus has the titular lyrics, with Uffie asking “Does anyone call you mine?/ ‘Cause boy you got me straight up hypnotized, no lie/ Does anyone call you mine?/ ‘Cause baby I can’t get you off my mind/ You can rock my chain for the night,” and a post-chorus of “Stop/ Go/ Stop, you can rock my chain for the night.”
In an interview with V Magazine Uffie states that “Mine” took inspiration from “all the possibilities and promises of adventure and mystery” that come in the summertime. She describes the song as “sexy,” which she says incapsulates the vibe of summer.
