Devon Welsh Premieres Bittersweet Video For “War”

Devon Welsh released a new song titled, “War” with a black and white video which shows Welsh looking straight to the camera while holding a microphone and articulating his heartfelt lyrics. He points his gaze at you directly while streaming his emotions and barely blinks and his lyrics are impactful in an intense fashion. According to a statement the song was written about the frustrations and resentments of a lost friendship, there is bitterness in “War,” but also the desire to regain what was lost.

Lyrics include, “Even if I’m shouting from a dream. Even if I’m standing on my own. Even if you’re there with everyone. Say you’re sorry. Even if I can’t get over myself. Even if I’m making my own hell. Even if it’s really all my fault. Say you’re sorry. Even if you’ve been there more than I have. Even if you think it can’t be that bad. Even if you think you know exactly how I feel. Even if we are now at war. Even if you’re picking up your rifle. Even if you’re aiming it at my head. Say you’re sorry.”

Welsh has certainly retreated to deepen his awareness around the meaning of life and getting to the core of life’s purpose through creative reflection. His recording process was described as an overwhelmingly solitary one. Welsh worked on “War” primarily alone and according to a statement, continues to record removed from the label system, towards an autonomous path, stemming from his own approach to his work. He says, “Making music is a personal thing for me. Ideally it is a reflection of something intimate.”

Two years after the disbandment of Majical Cloudz, Welsh released his 2018 solo album, Dream Songs. Welsh retreated to take stock of his purpose as an artist, left Montreal and moved to Wisconsin where he recorded in a basement studio and embraced a quieter, simpler life. He has worked on his emotional health through meditation and therapy. Dream Songs is described  as mellow and meant to amplify the dreaminess of his voice.

Welsh also released a new single called “Faces” black and white video set in the Wisconsin woods. He shares, “I feel that there’s a bittersweetness to life. There’s suffering and we know it has to end, but there’s so much tenderness in it nonetheless.”
