Surfer Blood Announces New EP Hourly Haunts For August 2019 Release, Debut New Upbeat Song “Around Your Sun”

Hanging out with the boys from Surfer Blood.

Surfer Blood has been through their fair share of hardships. Their last album Snowdonia was made in the midst of some pretty tragic situations, including the death of a member and member’s family falling ill, but it seems like nothing can stop them because they have recently announced a new EP and dropped a new single.

According to a press release sent to mxdwn, Surfer Blood’s currently untitled fifth album has just finished being recorded and they are aiming for a release date sometime in early 2020 but they are giving their fans plenty to be happy about in the meantime. Their new EP Hourly Haunts will be for sale during live shows as a limited edition record, but it will drop on streaming services August 16th.

Hourly Haunts will feature six new songs that won’t be on the upcoming 2020 album. One of those six songs, “Around Your Sun” was recently dropped as a single and it is the upbeat song of the summer that everyone has been craving. The press release reveals that  even though Hourly Haunts might have a bit of a different feel, “Around Your Sun” is “classic Surfer Blood. Loud choruses, straightforward drums, and a sampler of all the new pedal noises we’ve been splatter-painting all over this EP. It’s short and sweet and a great introduction to the next incarnation of Surfer Blood.”

“Around Your Sun” has a throwback vibe. The instrumental backing almost reminiscent of the 1960s with heavy drums and groovy pedal work on the guitars. The press release mxdwn received describes it as an “up-tempo, triumphant love song” and that couldn’t be more accurate. It is short, sweet, and absolutely invokes the feelings of being in love.

The EP itself is said to consciously be the opposite of Snowdonia. Where Snowdonia was introspective and included long interludes that were fragmented and sparse, Surfer Blood wanted their new material to be more traditional pop songs that were, per the press release, “short and unrefined.” It is also said that the new songs are very raw and emotionally satisfying and “Around Your Sun” fits the bill perfectly.
