Electronic music duo Sofi Tukker, made up of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, recently announced the follow up to their 2018 release Treehouse. Their next project is an EP called R.I.P. Shame, Pt. 1, to be released on September 20th. Their announcement of the upcoming EP came with a new single called “Swing”.
The song starts with a string section, eventually transitioning into the electronic arrangements for which the duo is most well-known. The house music influence is especially clear is the song’s hypnotic rhythms and deep bass. Hawley-Weld croons over that same string section from the beginning of the song intermittently as a bit of a break from the high-energy electronics. As far as vocals go, Hawley-Weld and Halpern trade verses in Brazilian Portuguese for the vast majority of the song. Some are backed by pianos, some are backed by mostly electronics, but they never cease to satisfy the ear.
Sofi Tukker’s first single for the upcoming EP, “Playa Grande”, was released last May. “Playa Grande” features fellow electronic duo Bomba Estéreo. The duo will be embarking on a headlining tour all over North America this fall in support of the new project. Hawley-Weld and Halpern have stayed busy throughout the first half of 2019, including a rousing set at Coachella just a few months ago.
