Electronica and alternative rockers PVRIS released new track “Death of Me” along with a music video, which premieres their upcoming album. While the new album is their fourth full-length album following 2017’s All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell, it would be PVRIS’s first album released via Warner Records. The band signed with Warner Records/Reprise at the beginning of this year.
Led by singer Lyndsey Gunnulfsen, along with two other members, guitarist Alex Babinski and bassist/keyboard player Brian MacDonald, PVRIS is known for performing on the cusp between electronica-laced rock and pop. Co-produced by Gunn and Grammy-nominee JT Daly (K.Flay), “Death of Me” maintains the style but offers more, as the listener cannot escape how catchy and tight the track is. Unlike traditional rock, the guitar effects and heavy bass in “Death of Me” ride with melodic anthems, which increase the freshness and lightness of the whole song.
The arrival of the new music video does nothing but adds a distinctive darkness aesthetic on this solid synth-wave piece. Gunnulfsen opens the first scene with a wriggling serpent on her face. Next scene jumps to her painful face when she is trying to break away from the multiple hands surrounding her head. As the lyric goes, she seems to express:“ You could suffocate me or let me breathe…this love looks like a loaded gun.” Following up, the video uses elements such as the tarot 3 of swords, stabbed apples and a dangerous knife game to cement a sense of cult and religious color. The pain and suffering within such sharp tension go straight to the jugular.
Directed by Katharine White, the video is skillfully conceived by PVRIS frontwoman Lynn Gunn. “We wanted to match the seductive grittiness of the song with uncertain, tense and subliminal visual themes,” explains Gunn. “We also hid, in plain view, references to the occult and divination, to be unpacked by the viewer… if they so choose.” Scroll down to enjoy “Death of Me”.
