Ingrid Michaelson Makes a Love Circle in New Video for “Missing You”

Indie pop singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson has released a music video for “Missing You” off her recent project, Stranger Songs. Stranger Songs is inspired by the Netflix series Stranger Things, and came out just a week before the third season of the nationwide hit show. Michaelson spoke on the Stranger Things influence when the project was announced, “I took inspiration from the show and the characters and all these ideas started to come to me. Every song on the record includes a reference from the show, some more specific than others, but all of the themes are universal – these are feelings everyone has”.

The song is definitely one of Michaelson’s more poppy cuts, features dance-music influenced production and electronically modified vocals. While Michaelson is certainly no stranger to pop, having attained multiple Platinum records and high Hot 100 placements, this record is definitely a departure from the more folk-focused work of hers.

The video consists primarily of Michaelson singing from the middle of a platform, surrounded by a spinning array of dancers. Everyone in the video is dressed is all black. The lighting, especially the color palette, changes drastically throughout the video from a vibrant purple, to a bright orange, even a dazzling pink. The juxtaposition of these lighting choices with Ingrid and the dancers’ muted wardrobe choices make for quite a few extremely unique visual moments. The video concludes with the dancers in a circle around Michaelson, passing her around as she sings the song’s powerful refrain, “Kissing me, I’m missing you / You’re in my head”. Eventually, the dancers fall to the ground around her and the video cuts to almost complete darkness as the song ends.

Ingrid Michaelson will be touring all over the country later this fall on the back of Stranger Songs. She also recently released video for “Pretty (Chapter 10)”, off the same album.

Matthew Jordan: I grew up in Massachusetts, but I am currently a student at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. I picked up my first musical instrument (viola) in the 3rd grade, and have been a fan of everything the medium has to offer ever since. Some of my favorite artists right now include Matt Maltese, Idles, MIKE, Benny the Butcher, Standing on the Corner, Built to Spill, and Frank Ocean. I also love following the charts and the music business to see what is connecting with listeners and why.
