mxdwn PREMIERE: JindaLee Delves Into the Natural World on New Single “Sleepwalk Reverie”

Canadian music scene veteran JindaLee is taking a major stylistic shift for her fourth album Vela, delving into the world of electronica. Today we’re premiering a single from that album that demonstrates that shift in genre, a hauntingly beautiful electronic-pop track called “Sleepwalk Reverie.” The song is punctuated by handclaps and hypnotic synths, creating an intriguing sonic template over which JindaLee lays down her gentle yet powerful vocal delivery, asking herself “how long till I get home?”

“Sleepwalk Reverie” is about being endlessly curious with the natural world,” said JindaLee. “It is a song about delving into the beauty of an experience. I wrote this song during a time that I had no permanent home.
I was going between sublets, residencies, friends’ places, and tours in Europe. I am generally comfortable in the unknown, but it became difficult as one year turned into two. There is a calm in having few belongings and lots of freedom. But there is also a disorientation in feeling flung out with no real landing zone. This song is about the feeling of letting an experience surround you in whatever kind of environment that is. During some time I spent at a residency in the mountains, I reflected on the feeling of finding direction through nature and the various ways we are taught to know how to orient ourselves when lost. “Sleepwalk Reverie” references those skills as a metaphor for finding yourself and your bearings when you feel emotionally lost or ungrounded.”

Growing up in rural Alberta Canada, her travels took her across the globe to live in distant locations. She’s called Germany and Japan home but has recently returned to her native Canada, albeit in the major metropolitan area of Toronto. Apparently, she’s still got a sense of adventure because she plans on moving to Berlin soon to explore her recent electronic music explorations.

Vela is out on August 2 and was written, recorded and produced and mixed by the musician, a first for her after working with a band on her previous three albums.
