Three years after the release of Love You to Death, the Canadian Indie-Pop duo Tegan and Sara announced the upcoming release of their ninth studio album titled Hey, I’m Just Like You. The new album will be released on September 27th of this year via Sire. Hey, I’m Just Like You is also the group’s first album created by an all women team which consists of producer Alex Hope (Troye Sivan, Broods); Rachael Findlen (engineer); Beatriz Artola (mixing); Emily Lazar (mastering); Annie Kennedy (assistant engineer); Carla Azar (drums) and Catherine Hiltz (bass). The album is meant to reinvent their early high school works from twenty years ago. Check out the teaser trailer below;
Tegan and Sara began creating Hey, I’m Just Like You while researching for their upcoming memoir High School, which will be published by MCD X FSG (USA) three days before the album’s release. Tegan explained, “While working on our memoir, we discovered lost cassette tapes that had been unheard for over 20 years. They contained dozens of our first songs, written between the ages of 15 and 17…we immediately recognized the songs as an essential part of our high school story.”
Due to Tegan and Sara’s unearthing of the past, the album will be rooted in their earlier rock and punk sound. The two fully worked on the album together and each song is a complicated collaboration. Sara and Tegan both wrote lyrics, melodies, and sung on various songs throughout, taking turns as lyricists, music writers, and singers. To sum up the album Sara and Tegan stated, “This is the record we never could have made as teenagers, full of songs we never could have written as adults.”
Most recently, Tegan and Sara’s song “I was a Fool” was featured in the movie Teen Spirit. They also just performed at the Loveloud Music Festival, an event that advocates and raises money for LGBTQ+ youth empowerment. Tegan and Sara have always made an effort to advance the LGBTQ+ community which they demonstrated back in 2017 with their cover album The Con X: Covers.
