Abortion right is back on the front burner of American political discussion – in the wake of conservative states passing laws in 2019 that restrict access to abortion across the country. A few prominent artists from the metal and hardcore music communities have announced a Bandcamp compilation to help raise funds for the National Network of Abortion Funds and the Yellowhammer Fund, two prominent charities that promote access to abortion.
Released by the Black Flags Over Brooklyn group, Riffs for Reproductive Justice collects 33 songs of new metal, hardcore, punk and dark folk genres. Thou, Emma Ruth Rundle, Closet Witch, Immortal Bird, Racetraitor, Jucifer, Svalbard, Woe and Elizabeth Colour Wheel make appearances on the compilation, containing several exclusive new, live, cover and demo tracks. Riffs for Reproductive Justice is available via Bandcamp. Check it out below.
According to Pitchfork, the charity compilation was assembled by Pitchfork contributor Kim Kelly. She addressed the mission of album: “This compilation is just one small effort made by a few dozen people who care, who are intimately affected by this, and who love other people who are afraid of what the future will bring.” Kelly adds, “there are so many other brave individuals and groups who have been putting in work around this issue for decades, and my hope here is to raise a significant amount of funds from within the metal, punk, and overall music fan communities to allow them to continue that necessary work.”
