Fiona Apple has announced that she will be donating her royalties from her hit “Criminal” to a great organization. According to The Fader, she will be donating to the While They Wait fund, a joint effort coordinated by Brooklyn Defender Services and RAICES to legally assist immigrants seeking asylum. Apple released a letter on a fan’s Tumblr blog, a platform where she will occasionally give updates to fans.  In the letter, she writes, “After months and months of reading the news about how my country is treating refugees, I’ve become gutted with frustration trying to figure out the best way to help.”She continued to say “I could write a song about this, and maybe I will,” Apple added. “But for now, I will use “Criminal” to help the wrongly criminalized get justice.”

Earlier this year, Apple teased fans at new music with home recordings of her in the studio recording the yet to be released material. In one of the videos, it shows Apple playing percussion, with note stating “make sure to say it’s my sloppy percussion, because I know I’m sloppy….” She also took part in the Chris Cornell tribute this year, performing alongside Temple of the Dogs, Miley Cyrus, and Miguel. She performed the song “All Night Thing.”

Apple’s last musical release was a lullaby called “I Can’t Wait to Meet You” written by Solangie Jimenez and Thomas Cabaniss released last year. It was apart of Carnegie Hall’s Lullaby Project compilation album Hopes and Dreams: The Lullaby Project. Her last full-length record was 2012’s The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do, which received much critical acclaim.
