Europe’s largest festival, Glastonbury, happened this weekend leaving fans and critics alike astonished by the number of eclectic songs and artists featured on the lineup. Top 40 artists such as Lizzo and Miley Cyrus took the stage and so did rock legends like The Cure and The Killers.
Miley Cyrus delivered a chilling performance of Amy Winehouse’s “Back To Black” with the help of producer Mark Ronson. She also covered Nine Inch Nails “Head Like A Hole” and Metallica’s “Nothing Else Matters.” Her voice complemented these tunes with her strong delivery and adaptability.
She made the crowd go mad when she brought on stage recent breakthrough artist Lil Nas X and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, to help her sing a mash-up of “Party In The USA,” “Old Town Road” and “Panini.” The trio of musicians seemed surreal which proves that only a music festival at the level of Glastonbury could create such iconic moments.
Lizzo performed for her largest crowd to date at Glastonbury and she had the audience jamming to her hit song “Juice” and almost brought them to tears with her notable motivational speech. “I want you to go home tonight and look in the mirror and say ‘I love you. You are beautiful and you can do anything’” the rapper said.
Something no one would have anticipated was Jeff Goldblum, showcasing his talent for playing jazz piano with help from The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra. He teased the crowd with the theme song from Jurassic Park when Sharon Von Etten joined him on stage to cover “Let’s Face The Music and Dance.” The cover is a preview of his new album which he plans to release soon.
The Killers put on a thrilling show with guest appearances from the Pet Shop Boys and “Mr.Brightside” finale. The Pet Shop Boys appearance was remarkable as they had not toured in nearly over three years.
The mix of artists could not have been any more diverse with Babymetal performing at the festival for the first time. They played their new single “Pa Pa Ya!” delivering unique and absurd energy that attracted a strong crowd for the group’s first time performing at a festival alongside other huge names on the lineup.
Kylie Minogue performed for the first time at Glastonbury and brought special guests Nick Cave and Coldplay’s Chris Martin. Her performance consisted of songs from her 2018 album, Golden, and a duet with her guests. Her performance had an emotional bent because she was supposed to originally perform for the first time in 2005 but was diagnosed with breast cancer.
However, the singer’s debut proved that she still has the spark and energy that she would have delivered more than ten years ago.
History was made at Glastonbury when British rapper Stormzy headlined as the first black British solo artist to headline the Pyramid stage. This is not the first time Stormzy has broken records as he was the first artist to appear on Jools Holland’s famous music showcase television series without a record deal.
Overall the festival set new standards this year and it will only go beyond what it brought this year to the stage for the years to come.
