LA-based pop group Holy Wars, have released “Legend”, the first single from the group’s upcoming EP, Unholy. Holy Wars is a duo made up of Kat Leon and Nicolas Perez, and their unique brand of anthemic power pop tune is sure to get your blood pumping. In “Legend”, Leon is exploring self-doubt, desperation, and what it means to reach the pinnacle of your craft. The production includes a number of unique elements, like unusually heavy electric guitars for pop and a kick drum that sounds almost like a timpani.
Lyrically, she is working through her own personal demons, and doing everything in her power to overcome all the obstacles in her way on the path to success and happiness. In the bridge, she sings, “I have prayed, I have prayed, everyday / Everyday, everyday”, before Leon starts to belt out the chorus, “We could be legends”, later ending the chorus with a simple but confident statement, “I’ll be a legend, and live like a king”. The song concludes with a repetition of that final part of the chorus, “And live like a king” as triplet hits of that timpani-like drum drive Leon’s kingship home.
Holy Wars’ previous single, “Born Dark” was released last October to much critical acclaim, including the Los Angeles Times calling it, “a distinctly heavy synth-rock sound that’s somewhere between Siouxsie and Suicide with a modern production sheen. Also, a rarity for a young band, Holy Wars already has an arresting visual aesthetic that should cut through the din of other goth-inclined local rock and electronic acts”.
