mxdwn PREMIERE: Coyote Kid Channels Retro Rock & Roll in New Video for “Femme Fatale”

Coyote Kid is the new moniker for rock band Marah In The Mainsail and today we have the premiere for their cinematic new video for “Femme Fatale.” The video was shot completely on 16 mm film, giving it an old-school retro vibe that matches the song and the story. It’s the first song from their new album The Skeleton Man, which is the band’s first album under their new moniker.

The clip begins ominously, with headlights illuminating a remote wildland, crickets humming and a appropriately, a coyote cackling in the distance. We’re introduced to the central character of the video, our “Femme Fatale.” She enters the shot walking back to the car that has its headlights on, carrying a gasoline container. We soon find out what the purpose of the canister is — and it’s not because she ran out of gas on a lonely highway and had to walk to the nearest service station to fill up the container.

Then, the music finally enters the mix and it’s heart-pounding rock ‘n roll, with lead singer Austin Durry’s vocals cutting powerfully through the mix. Throughout the song, accompaniment like Baumgartner’s trombone add to the swinging The video focuses on the engine of our anti-hero’s VW bug, which pounds and pulsates as she drives, leaking a mysterious red substance. In the next scene, she picks up a man who appears to be assaulting someone, seemingly easy pickings for the “Femme Fatale.”

But first she makes a kill with the unsuspecting man sleeping in the back of the car. As a jogger (played by bassist Austin Wilder) runs by she bludgeons him to death with a wrench, with her new friend helping out with the assault. At this point, it becomes clear that the woman is killing to feed her car’s insatiable thirst for blood.

“We’re thrilled to present ‘Femme Fatale,'” the band said in a statment. “A Tarantino inspired short film shot entirely on real 16mm film, telling the story of a dangerous woman and her vampiric car.”

Coyote Kid consists of vocalist Durry, singer and keyboardist Cassandra Valentine, bassist and vocalist Wilder, trombonist Baumgartner and drummer Kian Dziak. Christopher Behnen and Dena Winter directed the clip. Watch the video below to see the fate of the “Femme Fatale.”
